Iran Ancient

Project Duration:

Fall 2017

“Iran Ancient” pays tribute to Iranian typography through the use of laser cutting, blending traditional artistry with modern techniques. Iranian mosaic art, a hallmark of our cultural heritage, served as the primary inspiration for this work. While mosaic tiling reached its zenith during the Safavid era, its roots trace back to the Mongol period and evolved through various dynasties, including the Afghans and Zandiyah. By the time of the Qajar era, mosaic tiling had lost some of its original splendor, often imitating earlier styles.

During the Qajar period, European influence brought significant changes to tile designs, with new motifs—such as human figures and weaponry—emerging in the artwork. My design aims to reimagine this rich history through a 3D, laser-cut illustration, where each element is separated into different layers. This layering technique allows the viewer, when observing the piece from the front, to experience a complete, coherent representation of the illustration, merging traditional aesthetics with a contemporary approach to materials and design.
